Note

George Yates was born on 22 Nov 1846 in Ham, Bressay, Shetland and spent most of his life based there, either as crofter or agricultural worker. He also spent time at sea as a whaler and as a naval pensioner he may have been a Naval Reservist and seen action in WW1. His parents were John Yates (1801-1881) and Jean Anderson (1809-1893), both living their lives on Bressay.

George married Jane Tait, another resident of Bressay, on 17 Dec 1868 and they had four children, at least two of whom reached adulthood. Jane died in April 1920. He married Annie Colvin in November 1920 but died three years later.

Marriage of Annie COLVIN and George Yates: given the advanced ages of both, unlikely to have been any children. George's second marriage, he had four children from his marriage to Jane Tait, who died in 1920. Annie and George were married by William Fotheringham, witnesses; George Gifford and Christina Johnson.
